Pdf+ (for Series 80 smartphones and communicators)
Details
Pdf+ (for Series 80 smartphones and communicators) can display a large number of PDF 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5 files. Pdf+ silently ignores some unimplemented features and non-conforming PDF files, it will complain about other unimplemented features and non-conforming PDF files. Pdf+ is designed especially for Smartphones and Communicators. As these devices are still less powerful than desktop computers, some less-often used PDF constructs are not available.
- Pdf+ can display text in almost any language, in particular when the font used has been embedded. Otherwise, Pdf+ will use the installed fonts to display text. This will only succeed when a ToUnicode translation table has been embedded in the document and when the substituted font contain the used characters.
- For Simplified and Traditional Chinese documents using Type 0 fonts, you need to install the optional
Simplified and Traditional Chinese extensions during installation
(not in the demo).
Documents using Japanese and Korean Type 0 fonts cannot be read at this time. - For non-Unicode encodings, if the ToUnicode translation table is available, the text can also be searched successfully.
- Pdf+ can only display the complete Symbol and Zapf Dingbats fonts if you have the appropriate font files installed on your device. The built-in fonts do not contain some Symbol characters, and none of the Zapf Dingbat characters.
- Pdf+ doesn't handle the dynamic content of a PDF file, and it cannot render Type 3 fonts.
- Even though the quality of the printout is very good, printing itself is a bit slow. Printing also uses a lot of memory and will fail occasionally because of that. The Bluetooth connection in particular is rather fussy. We do not recommend printing documents that also take a lot of time to render to the screen.

Devices
This particular distribution is for Series 80 smartphones and communicators such as the Nokia 9500, the Nokia 9300 and the Nokia 9300i.

Document Content Reflow
As you will have experienced, the small screen of your Series 80 device isn't ideal for reading PDF documents. Most PDF documents have been formatted for reading on large PC screens, or from A4 or Legal-sized paper after being printed. For UIQ devices users, this results in a lot of scrolling around, which makes it too hard to read the text in a PDF document.
One way to reduce this viewing problem is to introduce layout information in the PDF document itself. The extra layout information is then used by a viewer to reflow the text making it fit small screens. This is exactly what happened with the introduction of Tagged PDF in the PDF 1.4 standard by Adobe, Inc.
There are however still some problems that need to be solved.
- Adding the layout information is optional, which will mean that a lot of the PDF 1.4 and later document will not contain the layout information.
- Pre PDF 1.4-files do not have this layout information at all, and it is almost impossible for users to add such information.
- You need to spend extra money to buy new tools to create PDF documents with layout information.
Document Content Reflow (DCR) Technology is a piece of software that addresses these problems. With DCR Technology, Pdf+ is capable of creating a new layout for the text on a page in a PDF document. The new layout will fit nicely on the screen of the device Pdf+ is running on, whether it is the small screen of a Smartphone, or the wide screen of a PDA.
Note: DCR Technology uses a heuristic algorithm. It is to be expected that such an algorithm makes mistakes, especially in it's earliest incarnation. In particular, sometimes the different pieces of text aren't always in proper reading order. Another issue is the lack of images and drawings in the reflowed text, which means that text that is part of an image (for instance the labels on a graph), are treated as 'normal' text, and not as part of an image. Finally, you cannot search for text, or follow links. It is expected that future releases of Pdf+ will have this functionality.

Printing
Pdf+ can also print PDF documents to a suitable printer. Even
though an entiere document can be printed, we advise caution as
printing using a smartphone or communicator is not as fast as
printing using a desktop PC.
The standard print function of your device doesn't allow choosing the pages you would like to print. Therefore Pdf+ introduces the Print range dialog, where you can choose to print the entiere document, the current page only or a range of pages.
Pdf+ normally uses the printer's fonts to print a document. This may result in certain circumstances is odd-looking or unreadable printouts. In particular, instead of characters, boxes are seen. In this case we recommend setting the Print to image option in the Print range dialog. In Print to image mode, Pdf+ renders the page to a bitmap, and then prints the bitmap. This procedure is almost identical to the way Pdf+ renders a page to the screen, and will result in a faithful representation of the page.
Character Collection plug-ins
Pdf+ needs some additional information to properly display certain Chinese, Japanese and Korean
PDF files. In particular, it needs information to map a number of the pre-Unicode character encodings to Unicode. The Character
Collection plug-ins contain the necessary information for Pdf+.
| Language | action |
|---|---|
| Simplified and Traditional Chinese | The Pdf+ sis file contains Character Collection dll's for Simplified and Traditional Chinese encodings. You will be asked during installation whether you want to install Chinese (Simplified) and Chinese (Traditional) support. Make sure the boxes are ticked. |
| Japanese | The Japanese Character Collection plug-in will be made available later this year. |
| Korean | The Korean Character Collection plug-in will be made available later this year. |
